The active ingredient in Epogam 1000 is the vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose. This oil contains an important fatty acid, gamolenic acid (γ-linolenic acid). Normally, gamolenic acid is obtained in the body from the fatty acids supplied with food. In patients with skin diseases that manifest themselves as itchy eczema, the concentration of gamolenic acid in the blood is reduced. This is thought to be one reason for the skin disorders. Evening primrose seed oil supplies the body directly with gamolenic acid and compensates for the deficiency.

Epogam 1000 is used for the supportive treatment and symptomatic relief of atopic, eczematous skin disorders with accompanying itching.
