Vitamin_B1 plays an important role in the breakdown of carbohydrates such as sugar and starch. For example, the body needs around 0.2 mg of vitamin_B1 to break down 100 g of chocolate, and vitamin_B1 is also involved in the functioning of nerves and muscles. A vitamin_B1 deficiency therefore leads to disorders in the utilisation of carbohydrates, nervous disorders and muscle weakness. Benerva is used to supplement an inadequate_{intake of vitamin B1} with food and to cover an increased requirement.

Insufficient intake: Vitamin_B1 is mainly found in the outer shells of cereals and in yeast. Vitamin_{B1 deficiency} can occur if finely ground cereal flour is consumed instead of wholemeal flour. Use in the event of a vitamin B1 _deficiency requires the recommendation of a doctor or pharmacist.

Increased requirement: The requirement is increased in the case of insufficient absorption by the body as a result of gastrointestinal diseases, alcohol abuse, heavy physical labour and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
