The intestinal microbiota - formerly known as "intestinal flora" - is the totality of all microorganisms in our digestive system, especially bacteria and yeasts. The intestinal microbiota of an adult can contain up to ¹⁰¹⁴ microorganisms that live in a natural balance with each other. This corresponds to ten times the total number of cells in the human body.

The bacterial strains are not all the same. Each strain is specific, even within the group of bifidobacteria. INBIOTYS Alflorex contains the strain Bifidobacterium longum 35624^®, for which several scientific studies are available.
